On the Road

Something as simple as a long car trip provides chances to discuss a variety of topics such as geography and math. For example:

  • Open an atlas or an Internet map site to show your child the routes you’ll be traveling. Discuss the shortest and longest ways to reach your destination point.

  • Talk about the price of gas. How many miles will you travel? How many gallons per mile does your family’s car use? How much does gas cost? Show your child how all these figures, used together, can help calculate the total cost of the trip.

  • Estimate your travel time. If you know how many miles you will travel, and the average speed you will be driving, have your child guess when you will arrive at your destination. Remember to factor in breaks!
